How to draw a sparrow – let’s start!

Step 1

Despite the small size of this bird, we will include a lot of detail in the drawing during this guide on how to draw a sparrow. While many details can be daunting, we’ll work at them slowly throughout the guide! For now, we’ll start by drawing the head and the beginning of the body’s outline. First, draw a small circular shape for the sparrow’s eye.

Another rounded shape will surround this with two sharp points on each side. This will then be attached to a small nib on the side, and then you can use curved lines to draw the head’s top and bottom of the outline. The back can be drawn with another curved line, and then you can use a few small curved lines for the feathery chest of the sparrow.

Step 2: Next, draw some of the details of the feather.

This second stage of your sparrow drawing is where it can start to get a little tricky! No need to worry, though; if you follow the reference image carefully, you shouldn’t have any issues. Use curved, jagged lines first to create the feathery base of the head. Next, we’ll draw a series of small, skinny oval shapes on the bird’s back.

Wing feathers may look tricky, but they’re not as difficult as you think! Try looking at the pattern created and then see how each feather contributes to the pattern. Take one feather at a time while using the reference image to guide you until you have drawn the wing.

Step 3: Draw the rest of the wing and add some feet.

You started the wing in the previous step of this guide on how to draw a sparrow, and in this one, you can finish it. We’ll do this by adding another layer of feathers, slightly longer than the previous ones you drew. You can expand the chest until it becomes more of those little curvy feather lines. You can then draw the skinny leg and foot and finish this step by drawing more of the feathery base.

Step 4: Next, outline the tail.

This sparrow drawing is falling into place now! To continue with this image, we will next draw the outline of the bird’s tail. Compared to some of the steps above, this one should be easy! Draw two curved lines extending towards the back of the bird to create the short, rounded tail. It will look more detailed now, but we’ll fix it in the next step, adding some details with the final touches.

Step 5: Add Final Details to Your Sparrow Drawing

You are now ready to finish this picture and have fun coloring in the last step of this guide on how to draw a sparrow! First, we’ll add some details to the queue you started in the previous step. To do this, add a few lines extending from the tip of the tail and then inwards.

Once that’s done, we’ll add a few more minor details about the rest of the sparrow. You could add a few details to finish it off at this stage! One idea would be to draw a background for this bird, so what kind of scenery would you like to create for it?

Step 6: Finish your sparrow drawing with color.

This is the final step of this sparrow drawing, and now you can finish it with some color! Sparrows aren’t known for their bright, vibrant colors, so we used muted browns and beiges to make things a little more realistic in our reference image. When coloring with these types of colors, mediums like watercolor paints
