2023 Ford Ranger Raptor Hit, Diesel Brothers and Sisters Follow

It seems that American buyers have been waiting forever for the arrival of the new Ford Ranger. Meanwhile, truck aficionados in Australia have a variety of midsize trucks to try out right now, including the hot Raptor.

It’s been almost a year since Ranger 2023 launched to the global audience, so let’s take a quick look at the update and Ford Ranger price. Powertrains will vary by region, with diesels common outside of the US. For Australia, that means 247 hp (184 kilowatts) 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel and 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder making 207 hp (154 kW).

More interesting is that the Ranger Raptor uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 gasoline combustion engine. European emissions regulations limit power to 288 hp (214 kW), but in Australia it’s 392 hp (292 kW). We expect a similar note for North America.

We’ve certainly seen some crazy numbers due to incorrect dyno settings; Atmospheric conditions and transmission patterns may also play a role. We point this out because the numbers shared in this video are quite surprising, with the diesel showing far more power than expected at the wheels. Meanwhile, the Raptor registers with less.

First, the diesel engine. The four-cylinder Ranger boasts 170 hp (127 kW) to the wheels. That’s 18% power loss, which is generally considered above average for a car with an automatic transmission. The V6 diesel is even better, delivering 212 hp (158 kW).

Doing the math we see that between the engine and the ground only 14% power loss. That’s well above average, even for a manual transmission car. However, Ford has discontinued the manual transmission Ranger from 2023 in Australia, so all trucks here use 10-speed automatic transmission.

It’s the Ranger Raptor now, and this is where things get weird. The off-road-focused truck generates 274 hp (204 kW) to the rear wheels, which is a massive 30% loss of power from the engine. A 20-25% loss with a traditional automatic transmission is common, so we’re in a quandary. Is the diesel Ford Ranger underrated? Is the Ranger Raptor overrated? Are we dealing with errors in dyno settings? Or is something else going on here?

With next-generation Ranger pickups yet to hit most of the world, we’ll likely have more time to wait before we see more dyno testing. The results of this race at least give us something to look at as more and more trucks find their way into owners’ hands.

Redesigned for the 2023 model year, the Ranger midsize pickup will receive the same treatment in the United States for the 2024 model year. The worst Ranger of them all is the Raptor, which owns a 3.0-liter V6 from the EcoBoost family. However, not all Raptors are created equal…

In Europe and the UK, the off-road pickup has 284 hp and 362 lb-ft (212 kW and 491 Nm) at the crankshaft. But in Australia, this engine is a bit more powerful. According to Ford, Land Down Under customers benefit from 292 kW and 583 Nm (392 hp and 430 lb-ft). Why is there this difference? As expected, the Old Continent’s strict emissions regulations were to blame.

Going back to the special Australian Ranger Raptor, the experts attached a landing pad to a dyno to find out how many of them made it to the rear wheel. The Dyno registered 204.3 kW (274 hp) and 535 Nm (395 lb-ft) of torque, which isn’t bad at all when we’re talking 17-inch rear wheels and alloy numbers. Wrapped in BFGoodrich KO2 285/70 by 17 inch All Terrain Rubber.

The Australian publication is also curious about the 3.0-litre V6 diesel, a single turbo compared to the Raptor petrol engine’s twin-turbo setup. The factory numbers are 184 kW (247 hp) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft), and the dyno says 158.4 kW (212 hp) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. into the back wheel.

But stay tuned because there’s more! We ends the clip highlighting with the 2.0-liter EcoBlue, 4-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine that debuted in February 2018 under the bonnet of the previous-generation Ranger Raptor. In this application, Ford quotes 154 kW (207 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). The Dyno registered 126.9 kW (170 hp) and 460 Nm (339 lb-ft). All in all, the numbers are respectable, that’s for sure! Glad to hear from you below the article.
